Science of Magic

The enigmatic world of magic and illusion is to be unlocked, as the science of showmanship and psychology of magic are explored at two unique evenings of spectacle, discussion and illusion on 27 and 29 July. The events will be hosted by one of the UK’s leading psychologists and former magician, Professor Richard Wiseman (University of Hertfordshire), and will involve jaw-dropping performances by Las Vegas magician Jeff McBride.
The event will form part of The Magic Circle's centenary celebration.

The enigmatic world of magic and illusion is to be unlocked after centuries of secrecy at the UK’s only venue dedicated to debates on contemporary science, the Science Museum’s Dana Centre in London.

The science of showmanship and psychology of magic are to be explored at two unique evenings of spectacle, discussion and illusion on 27 and 29 July at the Centre, which is fast developing a reputation for creating innovative science events for adults.

The events will be hosted by one of the UK’s leading psychologists and former magician, Professor Richard Wiseman (University of Hertfordshire), and will involve jaw-dropping performances by critically acclaimed Las Vegas magician Jeff McBride.

Forming part of The Magic Circle’s centenary year, the events will be webcast live over the internet, allowing everyone to discover the psychology and science behind some of the world’s greatest illusions.

The evening will include live performances of spectacular magic by McBride, an in-depth discussion between Wiseman and McBride on the psychology of wonder and Dr Gustav Kuhn (University of Durham) presenting a live demonstration of sophisticated eye tracking equipment used to unravel the mystery of magic.

“This is the first time that science and magic have been brought together in this way – conjuring is undergoing a Renaissance in the UK at the moment, and it is great have this opportunity to explore the topic with a magician who is as skilled and knowledgeable as Jeff McBride ” said Professor Richard Wiseman.
