Eduardo Souto de Moura and Richard Sennett in conversation with Ricky Burdett
Eduardo Souto de Moura worked with celebrated Portuguese architect Ãlvaro Siza from 1974 to 1979 and established his own architectural practice in 1980, which attracted great attention both inside and outside of Portugal. He has completed a wide range of projects, including ambitious private houses such as Two Houses at Ponte de Lima 2001-02. Souto de Mouraâs celebrated public projects include the Braga Stadium 2004; a new complex in Milan, Quarto Oggiaro, 2001; Casa del Cine âManoel de Oliveiraâ Oporto, 1998-2000; the Museum of Transportation in Oporto, 1993-95; the Department of Geology building at the University of Aveiro, 1990-94 and the Central Market in Braga, 1980-84. The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2005 designed with Ãlvaro Siza and Cecil Balmond â“ Arup is his first built structure in the UK.
Richard Sennett is a sociologist and the School Professor of Social and Cultural Theory at the LSE and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include the relationship between urban design and urban society, urban family patterns, the urban welfare system, the history of cities and the changing nature of work. He has served as a consultant on urban policy to the Labour party and is a frequent commentator in the press. Sennett was closely involved in the Mayors' Institute in the USA which has inspired the European Mayors' Conference organised by the LSE Cities Programme. His publications include Respect (2003), The Corrosion of Character (1998) and The Fall of Public Man (1996).
Ricky Burdett is Director of the Cities Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is an adviser on architecture to the Mayor of London and a member of the Greater London Authority's Architecture and Urbanism Unit. He is also a member of the City of Barcelona's Quality Committee; Director of the Urban Age project organised by the LSE Cities Programme; and adviser on architecture to the BBC, Tate and other public agencies in the UK and abroad.
