Beyond extinction rates: monitoring wild nature for the 2010 target (discussion meeting)

Developing a process for reporting against the 2010 target for reduction of the current rate of loss of biological diversity.

By agreeing to strive for "a significant reduction in the current rate of loss of biological diversity" by the year 2010, political leaders at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development presented conservation scientists with a great opportunity, but also one of their most significant challenges yet. This meeting will be a key step in the development of a scientifically rigorous process for reporting against the 2010 target. The presentations will provide a critical evaluation of existing global measures of the state of wild nature. What information do we have, and what are we lacking? How can we best use the information available to provide robust assessments in the face of data uncertainty, critical gaps and sampling biases? What steps need to be taken next if we are really able to measure changes in the rate of loss on biodiversity?
