Perspectives on our ageing world

What is the emotional impact of sensory loss and how might it compound the problems of isolation that many people experience in older age?

It is estimated that by 2040 nearly 15 million people in the UK will be over the age of 65. As the older population grows, many more of us will experience partial or total loss of our sight and/or hearing and the associated consequences. This sensory impairment is, however, rarely identified properly in older people – often dismissed as just part and parcel of getting old, and in some cases misdiagnosed as dementia. What is the emotional impact of sensory loss and how might it compound the problems of isolation that many people experience in older age – often left without the specialist support and help that could make a significant difference to their quality of life? What might the impact on society be of the increasing number of us who will suffer some form of audi0visual impairment? How will we communicate with our families, or even get out of the house? What are the implications for long-term care and for eligibility for services and medical treatment? How should society be preparing to meet the needs of a growing aging (and in some cases deafblind)population? Shereen El Feki, Healthcare Correspondent on The Economist, will chair this event.

Janet Askham is Director of Research at the Picker Institute Europe in Oxford, Professor of Social Gerontology at King’s College London and Scientific Adviser to the Department of Health Policy Research Programmes on Older People. Janet is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Alzheimer’s Society.

David Elliott is Professor of Clinical Vision Science and Head of the Department of Optometry at the University of Bradford, where he is currently investigating the link between reversible visual impairment and falls in the elderly. This event is in association with Sense.
