Two psychologists and a fashion editor will take a look at the vibrant life of the fashionable brain.
Most of us, when weâre feeling truly honest, will admit that what we buy on Saturday trips to Oxford Street isnât really essential to our survival. But the stuff we carry back home with us in shopping bags is a big part of our self identity, and says a lot about where we see ourselves in society. Maybe your Saturday sprees arenât on Oxford Street â“ maybe you prefer the Kingâs Road or Camden. Wherever you shop, your brain is on the lookout for ways to reward itself. So why does it choose to do it with a pair of shoes? Perhaps nothing else we buy contains as much of our self image as our clothes. We all have an idea about what clothing images work for us, and most probably have stories about times we made style mistakes! How can fashion take your personality from the inside out? This event will be chaired by Baroness Susan Greenfield.
Hilary Alexander is Fashion Editor of The Daily Telegraph. She was named British Fashion Journalist of the Year in 1998 and again in 2003. In May 2000 she was awarded the title Visiting Professor by the University of the Arts London.
Ali Guy is a psychologist based at the University of Teesside. She and her co-researcher Dr Maura Banim have published work on various aspects of womenâs everyday clothing use, and are currently researching womenâs clothing relationships as they diet.
Before becoming a psychologist, Nigel Marlow spent 15 years in the textile industry. He now lectures at London Metropolitan University, where he has developed masters courses in business and consumer psychology.
