In the last years of the 19th century, the Silk Road attracted a new type of traveller - the explorer-archaeologist. One of the greatest was Aurel Stein who made a series of epic trips through Central Asia, map-making, note-taking and collecting in the long-abandoned oasis sites along the Silk Road.
There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions after the talk. Dr Frances Wood is Head of Chinese, Manchu & Mongolian Collections at the British Library.
