Dr. Salman Sayyid - Mirror, Mirror: Western democrats, oriental despots?

October 4th: Dr. Salman Sayyid from Leeds University will speak on why it is that democracy as a way of life should be rejected. The title of his talk is Mirror, Mirror : Western democrats, oriental despots?.

On Tuesday October the 4th, 2005, 6 pm, in the Boardroom, University of Westminster (309 Regent Street, London W1B 2UW), Dr. Salman Sayyid from Leeds University will be the guest-speaker at the Democracy Club. In this opening event of our Autumn Program, Dr. Sayyd will talk on why it is that democracy as a way of life should be rejected. The title of his talk is Mirror, Mirror: Western democrats, oriental despots?
In a recent publication Dr. Sayyid remarks that 'those who seek in 'Democracy' hope for a more just world, need to let go of 'Democracy' as signifier of the West, and dare to imagine a world in which various societies and histories can produce notions of good governance which are commensurate with the fundamental pluralism of this planet.'
