Marine Wind Scales and Weathermen: Three Centuries of Understanding and Describing the Weather at Se

This seminar will examine the evolution of marine meteorological ideas from Franklin, through Beaufort and Maury to the present day.

January 2006 provides a fascinating conjunction of anniversaries relating to three key marine meteorologists: the 300th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin; the 200th anniversary of the birth of Matthew Fontaine Maury; and the 200th anniversary of Francis Beaufort’s proposal of a ‘scale of winds’.
