Burying Nelson: His Funeral and Legacy

This seminar will examine the funeral of Nelson and his lasting significance for the Navy and Britain.

January 2006 is the 200th anniversary of Nelson’s funeral and is a fitting time to bring to a close the magnificent commemorations of 2005. In this seminar we will hear about the funeral flotilla, the ceremony itself and the state monuments in St Paul’s Cathedral that were erected in the aftermath. Finally, we will examine the lasting significance of Nelson and Trafalgar for the Navy, the British Empire and our maritime heritage in Britain today.
