Weekly lecture series over eight weeks illustrating Britain's relationship with Egypt from the late 18th to the mid-20th century
We will begin with the Battle of the Nile and the subsequent Anglo-French craze for ‘Egyptomania’, then turn to the Suez Canal and the impact it had on world trade. We will examine the increasing political involvement of the British in Egypt: from the geo-strategic concerns of Gladstone and Disraeli in the 1880s to World War І, when Egypt became a protectorate of Britain. Lastly we will examine the Arab Revolt, the British defence of Egypt in World War Π and the Suez Crisis itself, within the wider context of decolonization.
