The Geckos Foot and Bioinspiration

Peter Forbes will speak about bio-inspiration, in which new technology is inspired by the biology of other organisms

Peter Forbes initially trained as a chemist and worked in pharmaceutical and popular natural history publishing, writing articles and reviews for national newspapers and science journals. He is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Queen Mary University of London.

Bio-inspiration is real cutting edge technology: engineering that takes its cue from nature.

The ‘catchiness’ of Velcro and glue as strong as a mussel’s grip owe their existence to the solutions evolution has already provided. Thanks to the recently discovered secret of the gecko’s foot – and just how it sticks to walls – we might one day soon be able to wear gloves and shoes that would make Spidermen of us all.

Speaking about his new book, The Gecko’s Foot, Peter Forbes will focus on the new area of bio-inspired engineering in which scientists, architects and engineers are developing and manufacturing materials inspired by or copied from the biology of other organisms.
