A two-day conference celebrating the coming together of the archtectural collections of Royal Institute of British Architects and the V&A.
Drawing is key to the design process of architecture â“ even today, with the ascendance of computer-aided design, hand drawing still plays a vital part in the creative method. Reflecting architecture itself, architectural drawings are both practical objects and things of beauty. Ascribing Value brings together a broad range of distinguished speakers including leading practitioners, curators, archivists, collectors and historians. Speakers will examine how the creators of such drawings use them as notations and expressions of the acts of looking, thinking and designing; how curators, historians and archivists see drawings as caches of unique information; and how collectors, dealers and patrons respond to the values proposed in such works. Drawings and objects from the V&A+RIBA collections will be presented for handling and discussion by curators and invited academics in a series of lunchtime seminars.
The conference will be of special interest to architectural, design and cultural historians, architects, museum curators, museum studies students, and those with a keen interest in collecting architecture, illustration and design. The conference is supported by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.
