Jacques Ranciere on Film and Social Fiction

The political significance of cinema has often been sought in its capacity for representing social identities.

The political significance of cinema has often been sought in its capacity for representing social identities. Perhaps, according to Jacques Ranciere, it would be more appropriate to consider its capacity for “de-presenting them”, for building bodies and fables which escape the tyranny of social typification. Jacques Ranciere is Professor of Aesthetics and Politics, The University of Paris – VIII and author of The Politics of Aesthetics and Film Fables
