Aziz Chouaki grew up in Algeria where he studied literature and learned to play the guitar to the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. With the rise of Islamic terrorism in the 1990s, he received threats and moved to France. Now a poet and a writer, he will be in London for the publication in English of his third novel, The Star of Algiers (Serpent's Tail, translated by Ros Schwartz and Lulu Norman). A gripping tale about a young Kabyle singer doing battle with fundamentalist Islamist corruption and violence, The Star of Algiers vividly portrays the harsh realities of a country in constant turmoil and shows the capacity for despair and hatred of those who have nothing left to lose.
