The Pharmaceutical Past

Ask an expert : discover the medicines of the past with the help of a specialist.

Drop in to the Old Operating Theatre Museum between 10:30 and 4:00 and discover the medicines of the past, within the oak-beamed Apothecary's Herb Garret of the Old St Thomas's Hospital. Talk to specialists in post-Roman ceramics and archaeobotany to unlock hidden facts about old pharmaceutical jars and excavated plant remains, through handling and examining objects from the Museum of London and Old Operating Theatre Museum collections. Or bring in your own medical objects for our experts to try and identify! A lecture on Victorian Surgery at 2pm further brings the past to life with a real 19th century amputation set and tools for the seemingly barbaric practices of trepanning and bloodletting.
