A lunchtime seminar by American academic and community broadcaster Avery Gordon
Avery Gordon's article, âAbu Ghraib, imprisonment and the âwar on terrorâ in Race & Class, July 2006 (which will be available to buy at the meeting) argues that the torture and sadistic treatment of prisoners in US-run prisons in Iraq reflect accepted civilian norms. Excessive force, civil disability and the loss of internationally guaranteed rights and indefinite detention are central means by which the wars on both terror and crime are being executed by the US. In a previous Race & Class (The Threat of Globalism) Avery interviewed Angela Davis on the US prison industrial complex.
