Jonathan Raban on surveillance culture

The author of the seminal fiction, Soft City, Jonathan Raban is considered one of the most astute and sensitive chroniclers of the modern condition

In his latest novel, Surveillance, Raban takes issue with the development of what he calls a culture of “promiscuous surveillance” – in which the technology and machinery of state security and surveillance have become so much a part of the furniture of life in the United States that we barely notice them. At the ICA, Raban will deliver a short lecture looking at the implication of promiscuous surveillance, after which he will be interviewed by Douglas Kennedy, author of The Pursuit of Happiness and Temptation.
