Hélène Alexander FRSA, Curator/ Director, of the worldâs only Fan Museum on â Hidden Depthsâ â“ the fan, an object of mystery.
Hélène Alexander FRSA, Curator and Director, of the worldâs only Fan Museum visits Bangor on Wednesday 8 November to deliver the T Rowland Hughes Lecture. This lecture is open to the public and takes place at the Universityâs Main Arts Lecture Theatre at 6.00.
Mrs Alexander, who has studied and collected fans for more than forty years, will talk on: âHidden Depthsâ â“ the fan, an object of mystery.
âFans in Ancient Egypt were endowed with mystical life-giving properties and even today they evoke the past in a way no other object does, opening up to reveal a concealed image. The surprise can be delightful, disturbing, funny, alarming or unexpected. The slides I will show illustrate all these, plus the hidden messages and intentions of such fans in their historical context. I will also touch on the subject of provenance and the emotions aroused by fans whose former owners were famous in their day,â said Hélène Alexander
The Fan Museum is the only museum in the world entirely dedicated to the history of fans and to the art and craft of fan making. Mrs Alexander and her husband set up The Fan Museum in 1991 in order to share her passion for the fan. Essentially a cooling device, the fan has also been status symbol, fashion accessory and advertising give-away. Collections held by The Fan Museum now include over 3000 fans and fan leaves from all over the world, spanning over nine centuries.
