My DNA: is it mine? Should I give it to a databank?

DNA... What is it? What information does it provide? Are scientists getting something for nothing? Do you actually own it? Depending on who you talk to, you’ll hear a different story...

Dr. Pierre-Antoine Gourraud, Geneticist, Université de Toulouse III
Dr. Jane Kaye, Lawyer, ETHOX, University of Oxford
Prof. Richard Ashcroft, Ethicist, Queen Mary, University of London

DNA... What is it? What information does it provide? Are scientists getting something for nothing? Do you actually own it? Depending on who you talk to, you’ll hear a different story... Come and discover the views of
a geneticist who sees the genetic information at the individual, familial or population level and gains knowledge of biological mechanisms...
an ethicist who ponders why you should or should not donate your DNA for scientific research and public interest and whether it is as good, and as important, as is altruistic blood donation...
a lawyer who will discuss the legal rights you have over your DNA while it is still a part of you or has already been extracted and stored...
