What happens to the identity, language and self of a refugee who cannot return to their homeland?
What happens to the identity, language and self of a refugee who cannot return to their homeland?
The 20th century created more refugees than any other century - people for whom return to their homeland was either impossible or undesirable. What happens to the individual in exile - to their sense of identity, language and self? If the idea of return can ever be contemplated, what does such an idea mean and what are its implications?
Samir El-Youssef, author of The Illusion of Identity, will explore questions of exile, identity and return in conversation with Eva Hoffman, author of Lost in Translation, Shtetl, After Such knowledge and Exit into History.
