Wim Crouwel

Wim really needs no introduction. He is one of the Netherlands’ great design icons, typographer, graphic designer, type designer, teacher and curator. Renowned for his systematic and creative approach to the shape of letters, he continues to be an influencial figure within the design community and now more than ever before young graphic designers look to his work for inspiration.

Born in 1928 in Groningen, he trained at the Academy of Arts & Crafts, Groningen, Netherlands from 1946 to 1949. He also attended The Institute of Arts and Crafts in Amsterdam, 1951–52. His Swiss inspired training, stemming from Bauhaus principles, fueled a career
inspired that wove theory and practice together. He has taught at numerous academies and institutions including The Royal Academy of Arts & Crafts Hertogenbosch and Delft University. He was Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art. Wim co-founded Total Design with Friso Kramer, Paul Schwartz and Benno Wissing and was Director from 1963–80. Crouwel and his
involvement with Total Design produced a prolific mountain of work. He has also been the Director of the Boymans van Beuningen Museum and is the recipient of numerous awards for his commitment and excellence in graphic design and typography. Wim has exhibited works
at numerous shows including exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Museum Wiesbaden; and the Design Centre, Stuttgart. His work has been published in many books and journals, including the recent monograph, Wim Crouwel Alphabets, published by BIS in 2003.
