Black History in the Medway Towns

As part of a series commemorating the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery in 1807, Brian Joyce will discuss the black population of the Medway Towns.


As part of a series commemorating the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery in 1807, Brian Joyce will discuss the black population of the Medway Towns and local reactions to black visitors and residents. His talk will span Medway's black history, from itinerant seamen, clergyman and servants in the late 17th century to a permanent settlement in the mid-19th century.

Brian Joyce is currently involved in a project with Chatham Historic Dockyard to celebrate the black contribution to the work of the dockyard and the Royal Navy.
