joie de faire (the making of stuff)

Françoise Dupré will discuss her experiences as artist in residence at the John Radcliffe Hospital and her current French installation at the Menier Gallery:

The exhibition has been made possible with support from the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust and Paintings in Hospitals who selected Dupré as the recipient of the second Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award; a residency project which places artists in a different NHS Hospital on an annual basis. Renowned for locating her practice in a wide range of locations and contexts, including public and non-art spaces, this residency was a challenging opportunity for the artist to extend her approach to art making in a social and healthcare context. The solo exhibition is offered as part of the award and gives artists the opportunity to showcase new work inspired by their experiences.

Joie de faire continues at the Menier Gallery until Saturday 31 March, Mon- Sat 10-6

Notes

joie de faire (the making of stuff) exhibition and publication are supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust, Paintings in Hospitals, PONY, Needles Industries (India) Private Limited and UCE, Birmingham where the artist is permanent Fine Art Lecturer.

joie de faire (the making of stuff) and the Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award are part of Françoise Dupré’s research project here and there.

“Joie de faire” (joy of making) is a term used by scholar Ellen Dissanayake when discussing the role of art in human society. For her, humans have an inherent “Joie de faire” and pleasure in art-making; “making special” are “hardwired into human nature”. The term has been used with Ellen Dissanayake’s kind permission.
