Sex, Satire and Sensibility: An Expose of 18th Century Art

Joshua Reynolds: A portrait of the Artist as Celebrity in Georgian England

This lecture explores Joshua Reynolds's claim to fame as the most successful portraitist in British history. It explores the ways in which Reynolds constructed his successful career, with close reference to the artistic traditions on which he based his art, and the dynamic social network he used to further his ambition.

Dr Martin Postle was from 1998 to 2006 Curator and Head of British Art to 1900 at Tate Britain. He has recently been appointed Assistant Director of Academic Studies at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London.
