Today every self-respecting celebrity sports an extravagant (and not very private) tattoo, but for most of the twentieth century tattoos were seen as badges from hidden subcultures – prisoners, carnival performers, gangsters or sailors... Why has a popular art form celebrating the exotic lure of the margins of society come to have such a mainstream and widespread appeal?
