A 10-minute talk every Friday in May to mark Rousseau's birthday.
Friday 21 May is the birthday of one of the most famous 'amateur' artists,
Henri Rousseau. Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!) (1891) is a great
example of Rousseau's imaginative approach. It portrays a crouching tiger
caught in the middle of a storm - strong winds and driving rain slant across
the whole painting in an intricate diagonal pattern.
The National Gallery is marking Rousseau's birthday with a 10 minute talk on
this painting on Friday 21 May, and every other Friday throughout May. Meet
at 4pm in front of the picture in Room 44.
