Many young people experience severe depression. Find out how the developing brain struggles with the transition between childhood and adulthood.
Vicky Pollard from Little Britain might be the quintessential teenager of our times but she doesn't really inspire much sympathy. So what happens if teenagers aren't just stroppy and moody but become depressed?
How does the developing brain cope with the transition between childhood and adulthood and how can you tell the difference between a bit of teenage blues and depression? The Institute of Psychiatry and the European Dana Alliance for the Brain are bringing together experts to discuss this at a special event: 'Teenage Blues - Whatever'.
'Teenage Blues - Whatever' will explore teenage blues in today's society, how to identify a more serious problem and what help is available. As well as presentations from experts in the field, a teenage depression sufferer will tell her story and the theatre company Y Touring will perform their play about teenage depression, 'Cracked'. This will be followed by a question and answer session with the panel.
Speakers comprise Professor Jane Costello, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences Centre for Developmental Epidemiology, Duke's University, USA. Dr K Mirza, Senior Lecturer in Child Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist, Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London. Carly Raby, Young People Participation Manager, Young Minds (www.youngminds.org.uk). Chaired by Vivienne Parry, journalist, BBC presenter and author of 'The Truth About Hormones'. Y Touring Theatre Company.
