An Introduction to...French Painting 1600-1900

A day long course examing French painting from the Classicism of the 17th century through to the beginnings of Impressionism.

The starting point for this course is the idea that French painting might be understood in relation to a certain set of issues and concerns. We will take an exploratory look at some of these themes as they developed between the early 17th century and late 19th century: tradition and the national school, art establishment versus individuality; the state and the art market, the dichotomy between sensuality and intellect.
