Identity in language learning research: where are we?

What do language learning researchers mean by 'identity', and how does it affect language learning?

In recent years, identity has become a key concept in language learning research. For many scholars, it is now taken as axiomatic that identity and language learning are inextricably linked. This talk will be a reflection on where we are as regards identity in language learning research. Among other things, we will examine what language learning researchers mean by identity and how identity is 'done' in different language learning contexts.
