Multiculturalism, Racism and Citizenship: Conceptual, Policy and Political Dilemmas

In the context of British society the debate about multiculturalism has been part of public discourse about race relations since the 1960s.

In the past decade there has been increasing evidence of confusion about the question of multiculturalism as a broad policy objective and as a basis for practical initiatives. This talk will explore some key strands in recent debates about multiculturalism, focusing on what they tell us about the shifting terms of public concern about race and ethnicity, cultural difference and forms of belonging in contemporary Britain.
