A lecture for sixth form students and their teachers. All contemporary science, including biology, rests on the extraordinary discoveries made in earlier times. Modern molecular techniques that are so powerful and widely used in biology today must be seen in the context of natural history and the environment.
How is adventure so closely allied with science? The voyages of discovery of 18th and 19th centuries by Dampier, Banks, Darwin, Wallace and others can be viewed as technology on a par with gene sequencing. What are the modern parallels of these journeys?
