The Silver Studio and Art Nouveau

Curator of the Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA)Zoe Hendon will look at what is meant by British Art Nouveau, and consider the contribution of the Silver Studio to it's development.

The Silver Studio were a commercial design studio based in West London. Established by Arthur Silver in 1880, the company developed into one of Britain's most important independent design studios, selling to leading manufacturers and retailers in Britain, the United States and Europe. Between 1885-1910, the Silver Studio became a great source of fashionable stylised Art Nouveau designs. Designers working for the Studio at this time included John Illingworth Kay and Harry Napper. The Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA) at Middlesex University is now home to the Silver Studio Collection, which includes over 40,000 original designs.
