Why Economics Matters

LSE and Palgrave public debate

How have the last two decades of economic research influenced our understanding of the world? Will this understanding strengthen the economy and improve lives?

This event marks the publication of The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 2nd Edition. The New Palgrave Dictionary has been the standard reference work for economists since its foundation in 1894. This latest edition is the first revision in 21 years. It provides an unrivalled snapshot of economic thought today and for the first time is now available in both print and online.

Orazio Attanasio is professor of Economics at University College London and Research Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

Franscesco Caselli is professor of Economics at LSE.

Tim Harford is the author of The Logic of Life and The Undercover Economist, and presenter of BBC Radio 4's More or Less. He is a leader writer at the Financial Times, where he also writes two Saturday columns.

Klaus Nielson is professor of Institutional Economics in the Department of Management, Birkbeck College.

Martin Wolf is associate editor and chief economics commentator at the Financial Times, London. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2000 “for services to financial journalism”. His most recent publication is Why Globalization Works (Yale University Press, 2004).

Evan Davis is a presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. He was the BBC’s Economics Editor from 2001-2008.
