Neil Jordan and Patrick McCabe talk about their work and influences: Ireland, unconventional love, the frequently disturbed characters in their books, violence, death and the way they tackle the moral issues raised by these subjects.
Both authors of moody, turbulent stories, Neil Jordan and Patrick McCabe
talk about their work and influences: Ireland, unconventional love, the
frequently disturbed characters in their books, violence, death and the
way they tackle the moral issues raised by these subjects. Shade, out this
month, is Jordan's first novel in 10 years, but follows other acclaimed
books, including Night in Tunisia, which won the Guardian fiction prize.
As a director, Jordan's films include the Company of Wolves, Mona Lisa,
The Crying Game, and the award-winning The Butcher Boy, adapted from
Patrick McCabe's Booker short-listed novel. McCabe's other novels include
Breakfast on Pluto (also short-listed for the Booker) and, most recently,
Call Me the Breeze. He has also written short stories, plays and a
children's book; his work has been broadcast by RT in Ireland and the BBC.
