The Bodysnatcher: From Shroud to Specimen

A lecture on 18th and 19th century bodysnatchers and anatomy schools


As private anatomy schools flourished in the 18th Century, all were faced with one problem : the lack of corpses available for dissection. To provide teaching specimens, even the most respectable of surgeons had the same recourse – to the bodysnatcher! The chill of winter was the best time of year for anatomy lessons to take place – and the dark nights aided the bodysnatchers to visit graveyards undiscovered...
