Filmed during more than three years on location, Welcome to Hebron focuses on the life of determined 17 year-old Leila Sarsour and dispels western stereotypes, which often portray Arab women as weak and victimised.
Other characters in the film include a former commander of the Israeli army, now working for an NGO and Leila’s classmates form the Palestinian Al-Qurtuba school surrounded my Israeli military installations and installations. On their way to school, Leila and her friends are regularly attacked by Israeli soldiers and settlers.
Despite her surroundings Leila comes across as strong, intelligent and outspoken with her own idea of a daily life free from oppression and violence.
Filmmaker Terje Carlsson is a freelance journalist based for many years in Jerusalem, working mainly for Swedish radio and tv. Welcome to Hebron is his first full-length documentary.
