[Yet] Each man kills the thing he loves (Oscar Wilde, 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol')

Psychoanalytic lecture within the parameters of english literature

In this talk I will consider briefly the character of Othello, who loved Desdemona intensely and yet was driven to kill her. I will also present material from two patients, both with a strong capacity to love, but also driven for many reasons to destroy the very people they love - one who does it (metaphorically) with a 'sword', the other with a 'kiss'.
