Madame Guyon, Mystic Prophetess of France

Early Modern Female Spiritual Leadership and Vision with Richard Lines (Swedenborg Society)

Women appear relatively rarely as spiritual or mystical leaders in the West. A few achieve lasting fame, but some who were influential in their own day fade into obscurity after their short period of fame. Tonight’s speaker introduces one female mystical leader who deserves remembering and celebrating: Madame Jeanne Guyon of 17th-century France. Scholar of mysticism Evelyn Underhill described Madame Guyon as a “medium” exhibiting clairvoyance, prophecy, telepathy, and automatic writing in bewildering profusion. A wealthy widow by age 28, this remarkable woman forged a religious career as a mystical teacher, writer and prophet. About her happened psychic phenomena and strange occurrences. The Catholic church had her arrested and sent to prison for seven years, but yet she continued to write, having produced a 20-volume commentary on the Bible, an autobiography, and many short works.

If you are interested in sexuality, early modern culture, spirituality, religion, mysticism, even angelic magic – we invite you to come along and meet this remarkable woman. We like to think her thoughts and adventures will make you think about transcendent experience in a new way.

Tonight’s speaker is Richard Lines. Richard is Secretary of the Swedenborg Society in Bloomsbury and author of numerous articles and scholarly essays. He has a particular interest in seventeenth century mystics and religious leaders, including Madame Guyon and Emmanuel Swedenborg.
