In this illustrated talk, UWE historians Madge Dresser and Peter Fleming will have just completed a three year Lottery-funded project on 1001 years of ethnic minorities in Bristol and their impact on Bristol's civic identity. What was discovered? What role did the public play in the writing of this history? Can this project point the way to a more far-reaching re-interrogation of Bristol's and Britain's history?

Madge Dresser is a Reader in History at the University of the West of England and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Much of her career has dealt with questions of national identity, the position of ethnic and religious minorities and the history of slavery in 18th century Britain and has written many books and papers on these subjects. Madge has worked closely with the Museum service on various exhibitions and projects since 1997 and is currently Chair of the Academic Advisory Group for the Museum of Bristol.
Dr Peter Fleming is Principal Lecturer in Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of the West of England. For the last ten years he has been working on the history of medieval and Tudor Bristol, and among his interests has been the experience of migrants into the town during this period. He has published widely on the history of Bristol and its region.
