Movers & Shapers - Japan-UK relations seminar series IV: Basil Hall Chamberlain

In the fourth of our Movers & Shapers Japan-UK relations seminar series, Professor Richard Bowring will look at the life of eminent 19th century Japanologist Basil Hall Chamberlain.

The fourth of our Movers and Shapers series looks at Basil Hall Chamberlain, one of the foremost Japanologists of the late 19th century. The only foreign professor at the time proficient enough in the language to be people to teach Japanese at Tokyo University, he was also first to translate the Kojiki into English, along with many other literary works. A keen traveller as well as writer and scholar, Chamberlain made an invaluable contribution to opening the world of Japanese literature and culture to foreign observers.

Speaking at this seminar will be Professor Richard Bowring, Professor of Japanese Studies at Cambridge University. He has published numerous works in the fields of Japanese literature, religion and intellectual history, including an article on Basil Hall Chamberlain entitled “An amused guest in all”.
