Jasvinder Sanghera, National campaigner and 2007 winner of âWoman of the Year Window to the Worldâ visits De Montfort University to give a free lecture at the Distinguished Lecture Series.
Jasvinder Sanghera is a national campaigner and leader on the issues impacting South Asian women and domestic violence. She is a voice for victims and survivors who experience crimes committed in the name of honour.
Jasvinder is a founder member of Karma Nirvana an Asian Womenâs Project, of national and international significance, and has been called upon as the expert in high profile cases of Asian women, working closely with The Home Office, Forced Marriage Unit, Foreign and Common Wealth, and all key statutory and voluntary sector agencies to advise upon policy, practice and support issues. She has been instrumental in advocating changes in the law designed to deal with forced marriages.
Jasvinder is the author of the best selling biography âShameâ which is a testimony to other women experiencing forced marriages. She has co-published research papers into the needs of South Asian Women and mental health across 3 generations of Asian women, identifying issues of shame, subordination, stigma and honour as it relates to this group.
In October 2007 Jasvinder received the âWoman of the Year Window to the Worldâ award, saluting a woman whose courage and determination to bring to our attention the plight of other human beings, changes the way we think about the world.
