Lawrie McMenemy MBE - Football Coach and former Player visits De Montfort University to give a free lecture at the Distinguished Lecture Series.
Lawrie McMenemy is a football coach and former player, best known for his spell as manager of Southampton FC. Lawrence McMenemy, an ex-guardsman, started his footballing career with Newcastle United, before moving to non-league Gateshead in the late 1950s. An injury ended his career in 1961, but he moved into coaching instead, spending three years coaching at the club.
In 1964 he was appointed manager of non-league Bishop Auckland and transformed them from a struggling side in Northern League champions and also took them to the third round of the FA Cup.
Lawrie guided Southampton to an FA Cup final victory over Manchester United in 1976. In 1978, the Saints won promotion to the First Division and in 1979 reached the League Cup Final. He managed the England B team, Under-21s, from 1990 â“ 1994 and was manager of the Northern Ireland national team 1998 â“ 2000. Following on from this success, Lawrie has been closely associated with sports writing, broadcasting and managing. He is a regular contributor to national and international radio and TV programmes and to columns in newspapers. He has also authored two books on sports.
Lawrie is Chairman of the Special Olympics Great Britain and football coach to the Houses of Parliament. In 2006 he was awarded the MBE by the Queen for his services to sports and was given the freedom of Southampton in 2007.
