To celebrate Darwin's bicentenary, Jonathan Howard will respond to Ruth Padel reading poems from her new collection Darwin A Life in Poems.
Charles Darwin wrote his secret notebooks, which blossomed into a series of books that changed the nature of biological and psychological thought, while working as Secretary of the Royal Geological Society at Somerset House. To celebrate Darwin's bicentenary, Jonathan Howard FRS, Professor of Cell Genetics, will respond at Somerset House to Ruth Padel FRSL, Darwin's great-great-granddaughter, reading poems from her new collection Darwin A Life in Poems, published this month. The event will be chaired by Randal Keynes, also a great-great-grandchild of Charles Darwin, and author of Annie's Box: Charles Darwin, His Daughter and Human Evolution.
Ruth Padel FRSL is a prize-winning poet, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of The Zoological Society of London, and is the first writer in residence at Somerset House.
Jonathan Howard FRS, Professor of Cell Genetics for the Institute for Genetics at the University of Cologne, and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1995, is the author of Darwin: A Very Short Introduction.
Randal Keyne's book Annie's Box is the basis for the film Creation , directed by Jon Amiel, starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, released later this year.
