Professor Judith Tanner, Professor from the School of Nursing at De Montfort University gives her inaugural lecture.
The influence of research on clinical practice in healthcare remains less than favourable, despite the time and effort devoted to it in healthcare systems world-wide. This problem has been particularly acute in nursing, where research infrastructure has been acknowledged to be in need of development. In this lecture Professor Judith Tanner will show how nursing research, when driven by practice issues, and with practitioners involved at all stages of the research process, can deliver real and immediate benefits to patients. To illustrate this Judith will draw on examples from her own work on preventing infection, in the operating theatre, ward, and community settings.
Professor Tanner obtained her Bachelorâs degree and MPhil at Glasgow University and her PhD from Anglia Ruskin University. She has worked in practice in London, Berkshire, Glasgow and Nottingham. Her first academic post was at Anglia Ruskin University, followed by research positions at the University of Leeds and Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a theatre nurse Judith is highly regarded among the theatre nursing community and was given the Chairmanâs Award by the Association for Perioperative Practice for developing theatre practice. Judith is a former Editor of the Journal of Perioperative Practice.
