Graeme Storey will present a national perspective on the classification of fish populations and devising new measures for reducing the pressures on the environment.
Chris Poupard will then discuss the application of this science on the Thames.
Graeme Storey, Environment Agency, & Chris Poupard, IFM and TFCC as the fisheries sector representative on the Thames River Basin Liaison Panel.
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) provides a significant opportunity for improving the status of fish populations in surface waters across Europe. After years of preparation the Environment Agency will soon publish the first River Basin Management Plans. These set out the actions to be implemented within the first cycle of the Directive. How have we got to this point and what information has been used to identify actions that will benefit fish?
Graeme Storey will present a national perspective on the range of work areas including the classification of fish populations and the building of an evidence base to justify new measures for reducing the pressures on the environment.
Chris Poupard will then discuss the application of this science on the Thames. Chris will summarise some stakeholder views on the Draft Thames River Basin Plan which are relevant to the current consultation; demonstrate how to access the plan, and how to find out information about the status of water bodies you are interested in locally. He will emphasize the opportunities that WFD presents to the fisheries and conservation sector; describe example partnership projects in Thames Region and invite the audience to consider how they would like to participate in the WFD process.
