This conference focuses on Britian's most remarkable cultural theorists, Herbert Readâs relationship to other modernist thinkers and to ideas that have developed since his death.lateral relationships that are explored in her most recent study, Siblings: Sex and Violence (2003).
Herbert Read (1893â“1968) was one of Britainâs most remarkable cultural theorists. A tireless promoter of the avant-garde, he was an early admirer of Expressionist and Surrealist art, an advocate of Idealist and Existentialist philosophy and a pioneer of psychoanalysis as a critical tool. His anarchist views were similarly radical, offending left and right alike. This conference focuses on Readâs relationship to other modernist thinkers and to ideas that have developed since his death. The international line up includes Allan Antliff, Lee Beard, Andrew Causey, Margaret Garlake, David Getsy, Jason Harding, David Hulks, Leene Kore-Schroder, Jennifer Ramkalawn, Tom Steele, Dana Ward, Michael Whitworth, and Jerry Zaslove.
