ZSL Stamford Raffles Lecture - Prof. John Beddington - Biodiversity & ecosystems in a changing world

The Stamford Raffles Lecture is the foremost event in ZSL's annual programme of scientific meetings. Established in 1995, the lectures have been given by eminent speakers on a wide range of zoological topics. We are delighted that Professor John Beddington, Government Chief Scientific Adviser, will present the 2009 Stamford Raffles Lecture

The challenges we face in providing enough safe, clean and affordable energy, water and food for our growing global population, which is moving into cities, are intimately linked to the challenge of mitigating and adapting to climate change. It is clear that any effective way to solve these challenges should continue to recognise the importance of maintaining our rich ecosystems. Scientists are increasing their understanding of the benefits that well-functioning ecosystems provide 'behind the scenes'; for example, in sequestering our carbon, purifying our water and pollinating our crops. It is vital that we continue to bring these issues to the attention of policy-makers. Biodiversity and supporting ecosystems should not be neglected when decisions are made, both nationally and internationally.

PROFESSOR JOHN BEDDINGTON was appointed as Government Chief Scientific Adviser on 1 January 2008. His main research interests are the application of biological and economic analysis to problems of natural resource management including, inter alia, fisheries, pest control, wildlife management and the control of disease. He was Professor of Applied Population Biology at Imperial College London until his appointment as GCSA.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and are subject to availability. Please arrive at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. The lecture will be followed by a canape reception between approximately 8 and 9.30pm.
