Gary Lachman, occult historian and author of 'Into the Interior; Discovering Swedenborgâ, discusses the influence of Emanuel Swedenborg on the work of Edgar Allen Poe.
Voltaire said that the most extraordinary man in recorded history was Charles XII. I would disagree: the most extraordinary man - if we admit such superlatives - was that mysterious subject of Charles XII, Emanuel Swedenborgâ. â”Jorge Luis Borges
Gary Lachman, occult historian and author of 'Into the Interior; Discovering Swedenborgâ, discusses the influence of Emanuel Swedenborg on the work of Edgar Allen Poe. As radical scientist, philosopher, mystic and theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 -1772) was a pervasive presence in Romantic, symbolist and gothic literature throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His ideas about the spiritual world and its symbolism in material reality, his dream diaries and descriptions of heaven and hell (which he believed to be subjective states of mind) have proven rich inspiration for the literary imagination.
If you are interested in literature, philosophy, metaphysics, theology or esoteric beliefs, come along! The bookshop will also be open, selling the works of Poe and Swedenborg. The lecture is free to all and centrally located in the heart of Bloomsbury. Complementary refreshments will be provided.
