Eastside Community Heritage, in conjunction with Queen Mary, is hosting a witness seminar to discuss the concept of the LDDC and its results.
The area of London now called Docklands was once a thriving industrial heartland. In the 1960s the area slipped into long-term economic decline, before a programme of reinvestment began in the 1980s through the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC).
Eastside Community Heritage, in conjunction with Queen Mary, University of London, is hosting a witness seminar to discuss the concept of the LDDC and its results. The seminar will be led by a panel of experts and key decision makers of the period, including: politicians; LDDC members; architects; officials; and other interested persons. Dr Janet Foster, author of 'Docklands: Cultures in Conflict, Worlds in Collision' will give a short introductory talk.
The discussion will be recorded and transcribed, with the aim of making the material available to researchers and the local community. The seminar will form part of Working Lives of the Thames Gateway, a three-year oral history project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project aims to record and celebrate the memories of those who have lived and worked in east and south east London.
Eastside Community Heritage began in 1993 and has been an independent charity since 1997. In 1999 Eastside established the East London People's Archive, which now holds over 1,400 oral histories and thousands of photographs, all preserved and archived for public benefit.
This event is in conjunction with Eastside Community Heritage as part of the Working Lives of the Thames Gateway project.
