Professor Jannet Wright, Professor from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at De Montfort University gives her inaugural lecture.
Most of us take for granted our ability to communicate successfully with family, friends and colleagues. However, many people in the UK do not develop this ability, are unable to communicate as effectively as they want to, or lose the skills and abilities they once had. Speech, language and communication problems can affect anyone at any age. The impact of such problems can contribute to academic failure, emotional difficulties, social isolation and economic loss. The Government commissioned Bercow Review (2008) highlighted the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people from 0-19 years and emphasised the need for professionals to work with service users to provide appropriate and sustainable support for them and their families. This lecture will focus on the ways in which people work together to provide integrated services to support those with communication problems, how this type of support develops, and how it can be evaluated.
Professor Jannet Wright joined De Montfort University in March 2006 from University College London to become Head of the Speech and Language Therapy Division. Her research has focussed on professional collaboration and patterns of provision for children with communication problems. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, an Honorary Professor of University College London and she is registered with the Health Professions Council.
